Create a cohesive brand with Google’s design.md standard

Learn how to use Google’s open-source DESIGN.md format and Stitch skills to give AI coding agents a reusable visual source of truth for building consistent, on-brand prototypes.

AI is way past its initial phase. We now have the ability to use Google's open-source design.md file, feed it into Claude Code or Codex, and create a brand system that companies can actually use to promote their products.

In this guide, we’ll walk through how to use Google’s open-source DESIGN.md format and Stitch skills to give an AI coding agent a clear visual reference it can reuse. We’ll create or pull together a DESIGN.md file, use it to build a local prototype, and then look at how to refine the results without having to explain your brand style all over again each time.

We’ll install Google’s Stitch skills, create or extract a DESIGN.md file, and use it to generate a lightweight local prototype. In our test, that file helped turn a rough Tiki bar idea into a full visual system, including the color palette, typography, component rules, patterns to avoid, motion guidance, and a working “Tom’s Tiki Drinks” prototype.

By the end of this tutorial, you'll be able to:

  • Install the stitch skills

  • Make the agent inspect its skills

  • Create or extract a design.md file

  • Review the files before building

  • Build a lightweight prototype

Let's get started!
