Is DaVinci Resolve Studio worth it in 2026?
What the free version of DaVinci Resolve already covers, what the Studio license adds as Blackmagic lists it, the list and sale prices, and how many months of a subscription it takes to pass them, read October 20, 2026.
The quick answer
DaVinci Resolve Studio costs $236 during Blackmagic's Save 20% sale and $295 at its listed price (read on blackmagicdesign.com on October 20, 2026), and it earns that once the free version's limits start costing you time. The free version works with virtually all 8-bit video formats at up to 60 fps in resolutions as high as Ultra HD 3840 x 2160, and Studio adds 10-bit video, up to 120 fps and resolutions beyond 4K. Blackmagic's features PDF marks noise reduction, Magic Mask, Speed Warp, SuperScale and Voice Isolation as Studio, but Auto Color, Shot Matching, Gyroscopic Stabilization and Dialogue Leveler as available without it, although the product page says Studio adds the DaVinci AI Neural Engine. Against an example subscription of $20 a month (our assumption, not a vendor price), a subscription passes the list price in month 15 and the sale price in month 12. The catches: the sale price changed during October 20 and may move again, the price excludes sales tax and shipping, and some Studio features need separate licenses. For subscription editors, see our CapCut Pro and Descript reviews.

The free version of DaVinci Resolve is capable enough that the useful question is what $0 already covers before asking what a license buys. Blackmagic's product page says the free version works with virtually all 8-bit video formats at up to 60 fps in resolutions as high as Ultra HD 3840 x 2160, and that it includes multi-user collaboration and HDR grading. Studio is the paid step for 10-bit video, higher frame rates and resolutions, and a set of AI and effects tools.
Every Blackmagic price and limit here comes from blackmagicdesign.com, read on October 20, 2026 in its US store view: the product page, the Studio page, the Tech Specs page, the Fairlight page, Blackmagic's Studio and iPad Features document (dated 28 Sep 2026 in its support index) and a FAQs thread on Blackmagic's forum. The subscription examples and every total are our arithmetic. Academy data: at least four of our published reviews mention DaVinci Resolve (we counted four on October 20, 2026). CapCut Pro, Descript and Topaz Video AI name it as a free or one-time-price route, Krea lists a Resolve plugin, and two of the four quote Studio's price.
DaVinci Resolve free vs Studio at a glance, read October 20, 2026
Where Blackmagic's Studio and iPad Features document has a row, the cells follow its Desktop column: Yes means no Studio license is needed and Studio means one is. The document prints no key, so that reading is ours, and it also covers DaVinci Resolve for iPad, which this review does not. Other rows are the product and Studio pages' wording. Rows marked computed are our arithmetic from the list and sale prices, with example subscription prices that are our assumptions.

What you get
- ✓The free version is listed at no charge and includes multi-user collaboration and HDR grading, per Blackmagic.
- ✓Studio lifts the ceilings to 10-bit video, up to 120 fps and resolutions beyond 4K.
- ✓Many AI and effects tools share one price: Magic Mask, Speed Warp, SuperScale, noise reduction and Voice Isolation are all marked Studio in Blackmagic's features document.
- ✓One price with no billing period shown, so the page lists no renewal date or monthly charge.
- ✓Two machines per activation key, per Blackmagic's FAQs thread, for example a workstation and a travel laptop.
The trade-offs
- ✕The sale price has no end date and has already moved once on October 20, and the listed price is the regular one.
- ✕The price excludes sales tax and shipping, per Blackmagic's MSRP footnote.
- ✕Some Studio features need extra licenses: advanced Dolby Vision trim controls (Dolby) and encrypted DCP (Easy DCP).
- ✕Blackmagic's pages differ on the Neural Engine: the product page says Studio adds it, the features document marks Auto Color, Shot Matching, Gyroscopic Stabilization and Dialogue Leveler as Yes.
- ✕Hardware is a separate purchase: keyboards, color panels and audio consoles have their own prices, though several keyboards and panels list a Studio activation key in the box.
- ✕Blackmagic's forum and product page differ on where to buy: a forum FAQ post from February 2019 says retailers only, the product page has a buy button.
Worth it if…
- →Your footage is 10-bit or runs above 60 fps, or you deliver beyond Ultra HD, which Blackmagic lists as Studio features.
- →You want tools that Blackmagic's features document marks Studio, such as noise reduction, Magic Mask, Speed Warp, SuperScale or Voice Isolation.
- →You would otherwise pay a monthly subscription for a year or more, since the example subscriptions pass Studio's list price within 10 to 30 months.
- →You edit on a desktop and a laptop, which fits the two machines Blackmagic describes per activation key.
Skip it if…
- →The free version's limits (8-bit, 60 fps, Ultra HD) already cover your footage and delivery.
- →You rely on Auto Color, Shot Matching, Gyroscopic Stabilization or Dialogue Leveler, which the features document marks Yes, meaning no Studio license.
- →You need Dolby Vision advanced trim controls or encrypted DCP, which need separate licenses on top of Studio.
- →You expect hardware to be included. Keyboards, panels and consoles are separate products.
How much does DaVinci Resolve Studio cost?
Studio costs $236 now and $295 at list. Blackmagic's product page shows the Studio 21 card with a "Was" price, a "Now" price and a "Save 20%" badge, and the button reads "Buy Online Now". The listed price is the regular price and the sale price is a promotion: the $59 difference is exactly 20% of the list price, and the page shows no end date.
The sale price has already moved. It changed during October 20, 2026 and may move again, so check the figure on the day you buy. Blackmagic's footnote says "MSRP includes duties, but excludes sales tax and shipping costs." Your total can therefore be higher than the card by the sales tax where you live. The pages show one price with no monthly or yearly period, so this review treats Studio as a single payment, and the FAQ below says what to confirm at checkout.
The same page sells editor keyboards, color panels and Fairlight audio consoles as separate products with their own prices, and the keyboards and color panels carry the same Save 20% badge. The cost examples below exclude all hardware. Blackmagic's Tech Specs page does list a Studio activation key under "What's Included" for the Speed Editor, the Editor Keyboard and the Micro Panel (not the Micro Color Panel), Mini Panel and Advanced Panel, so check that list if you were buying one of them anyway.
Is DaVinci Resolve really free, and what does the free version cover?
Blackmagic lists the free version at no charge, with a "Free Download Now" button, and says it exists "so you can learn how to use the same tools that professional Hollywood artists use". Its Studio page calls the free version "packed with more features than most paid software applications", which is Blackmagic's claim, not a measurement.
The concrete statements are narrower. The free version edits and finishes up to 60 fps in resolutions as high as Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 and works with virtually all 8-bit video formats. Blackmagic's Studio page lists extensive color grading tools in it, including luma, HSL and 3D keyers, a color warper and HDR tools, plus video collage, elastic wave audio retiming and multi-user collaboration on one project. The features document marks HDR grading, project collaboration, Elastic Wave audio re-timing, compound clips, subtitles, Fairlight effects and automation, the ADR and sound library and Fusion effects and titles as Yes rather than Studio.
The ceilings are the catch. The features document marks timeline and render resolution higher than UHD, timeline frame rates above 60 fps and timeline sample rates of 96 kHz and higher as Studio, and the product page words Studio as 10-bit video up to 120 fps and resolutions beyond 4K. Studio's page also names formats it adds, among them advanced AVCHD, AVC-Intra and H.264 camera formats that use "all-I" intraframe encoding. If your camera records 10-bit footage or you shoot above 60 fps, check your files in the free version before you rely on it.
What does DaVinci Resolve Studio add?
Picture and delivery limits. Beyond the ceilings above, the features document marks as Studio the multiple image processing GPUs, stereoscopic 3D projects and tools, the scripting API, remote grading and rendering, background rendering and analysis, lens distortion correction, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Vivid workflows, HDR video scopes and the advanced IMF packaging. The Studio page says up to 32K, and the Fairlight page names 8K, 120 frame per second support as a Studio tool.
AI tools. The product page says Studio "includes everything in the free version plus the DaVinci AI Neural Engine, dozens of additional Resolve FX, temporal and AI spatial noise reduction, text based editing, magic mask, film grain, optical blur and more". The features document is more specific. It marks Magic Mask, Speed Warp, SuperScale, UltraNR noise reduction, Smart Reframe, IntelliSearch, IntelliScript, scene cut detection, and Subtitles and Transcriptions from Audio as Studio, and marks Voice Isolation, Music Remixer and Dialogue Separator the same way. It has no row named text based editing, so that one rests on the product page.
Effects. The Studio page lists over 45 additional Resolve FX, such as AI UltraNR noise reduction, SuperScale and de-interlacing. The features document marks every Resolve FX it lists as Studio, among them Film Grain, Film Look Creator, Lens Blur, Lens Flare, Object Removal and UltraSharpen, along with the spatial and temporal noise reduction.
Workflow and audio. The Studio page lists immersive 3D audio with Dolby Atmos mastering, Python and Lua scripting with developer APIs, workflow integration plug-ins, remote monitoring and grading, and IMF and DCP encoding and decoding. Much of this group serves post-production studios, so a solo editor should weigh the first three groups first.
Blackmagic names two Studio features that need a separate license on top of it. Access to advanced Dolby Vision trim controls requires a separate Dolby license, and support for encrypted DCP requires a separate Easy DCP license.
Blackmagic's own pages differ on the Neural Engine. The product page says Studio adds it and its Neural Engine paragraph names auto color and color matching among its features. The features document marks Auto Color, Shot Matching, Gyroscopic Stabilization and Dialogue Leveler as Yes rather than Studio, even though it lists them in its Neural Engine section or with its Neural Engine AI footnote. This review follows the per-feature document for which tool needs Studio, and the product page for what the document does not list.
When does Studio cost less than a subscription editor?
Take a YouTuber or freelancer who edits two videos a week, which is 104 videos over 52 weeks. This page prices no subscription editor, so the comparison uses three example monthly prices, $10, $20 and $30, which are our assumptions and not any vendor's price. Studio costs the same whether you cut one video or 104.
A subscription passes Studio's list price in the first month its total exceeds it: month 30 at $10 a month ($300), month 15 at $20 ($300) and month 10 at $30 ($300). It passes the sale price at month 24 at $10, month 12 at $20 and month 8 at $30, each time with a $240 total, which is $4 above it. Over 36 months the three examples total $360, $720 and $1,080.
Spread over the videos, a Studio license held for two years at two videos a week (208 videos) works out to about $1.42 a video at list and about $1.13 at the sale price. Both figures are computed from the prices above.
This comparison matters only if you would otherwise pay for a subscription. If the free version already does the job, $0 beats any total here. A subscription editor may also include things Studio does not, so compare features as well as totals. Our CapCut Pro and Descript reviews list those editors' plans.
How many computers can one Studio license run on?
The product pages do not say. Blackmagic's FAQs thread on its forum says "Each activation-key license is valid for two machines you may want to work on, for example, a workstation and a travel laptop." It adds that entering the license ID at startup deactivates the key on the last machine, that activation keys run all Studio versions from version 14 onwards including minor versions, and that existing dongles are still supported for a single seat at a time. The features document lists an activation key, a license dongle and Blackmagic cloud licensing for standard installations, and says Studio purchases from the Mac App Store are separate licenses that are not interchangeable with the others.
An older forum thread and the product page differ on where to buy. The thread, posted February 12, 2019, says Studio licenses are sold exclusively through Blackmagic's retailers, while the product page carries a "Buy Online Now" button. Confirm where you are buying, the license terms and the total you are charged before you pay.
Which editors should you compare Studio with?
Our Topaz Video AI review prices a dedicated AI upscaler next to Studio's Super Scale, and this page does not compare output quality. If you are weighing Adobe Premiere, Adobe says Premiere Pro is now called Adobe Premiere and lists its plans on its own site, and this review quotes no Adobe price. The AI video and visual content collection collects the Academy's video tutorials.
The verdict
Start with the free version, which Blackmagic lists at no charge and describes as including collaboration, HDR grading and extensive color tools. Buy Studio when a ceiling or a Studio-only tool is costing you time: footage above 8-bit or 60 fps, resolutions beyond Ultra HD, noise reduction, Magic Mask, Speed Warp, SuperScale or Voice Isolation. In our examples a subscription passes the list price within 10 to 30 months and the sale price within 8 to 24 months, but that comparison only counts if you would otherwise subscribe.
The limits are specific. The sale price moved on October 20 and shows no end date, the price excludes sales tax and shipping, activation covers two machines per Blackmagic's FAQs thread, some features need extra licenses, and Blackmagic's pages differ about the Neural Engine. Re-check the price on the day you buy, because this review reflects October 20, 2026.

Frequently asked questions
How much does DaVinci Resolve Studio cost in 2026?▾
Blackmagic's product page, read October 20, 2026, shows DaVinci Resolve Studio 21 as Was $295, Now $236 under a Save 20% badge. The listed price is the regular price, and the sale price changed during that day and shows no end date. The page shows one price with no monthly or yearly period. Blackmagic's footnote says the MSRP includes duties but excludes sales tax and shipping costs.
Is DaVinci Resolve Studio worth it over the free version?▾
It is worth it if you need what Blackmagic marks as Studio: 10-bit video, up to 120 fps, resolutions beyond 4K, noise reduction, Magic Mask, Speed Warp, SuperScale or Voice Isolation. Its features document marks Auto Color, Shot Matching, Gyroscopic Stabilization and Dialogue Leveler as available without Studio, although the product page says Studio adds the Neural Engine. If the free version's limits (virtually all 8-bit formats, up to 60 fps, as high as Ultra HD 3840 x 2160) fit your footage, Studio is spend you can skip.
Is DaVinci Resolve really free?▾
Blackmagic lists a free version with a Free Download Now button, and says Studio includes everything in the free version plus extras. The free version has stated ceilings of 8-bit formats, 60 fps and Ultra HD 3840 x 2160, and it includes multi-user collaboration and HDR grading. Keyboards, color panels and audio consoles are separate products with their own prices.
How many computers can one DaVinci Resolve Studio license use?▾
The product pages do not say. Blackmagic's FAQs thread on its forum says each activation-key license is valid for two machines, for example a workstation and a travel laptop, and that existing dongles are supported for a single seat at a time. Its features document adds that Mac App Store Studio purchases are separate licenses and not interchangeable. Confirm the terms and the total at checkout, because the same February 2019 thread says licenses are available exclusively through Blackmagic's retailers while the product page has a buy button.
When does DaVinci Resolve Studio cost less than a subscription editor?▾
Against example prices that are our assumptions, not vendor prices: a $20 a month subscription passes the list price in month 15 and the sale price in month 12. At $10 a month those months are 30 and 24, and at $30 a month they are 10 and 8. The comparison only counts if you would otherwise pay for a subscription.
