Is NotebookLM worth it in 2026?
The short answer: the free plan is enough for most people. Here are Google's own notebook and source caps for each plan, what Plus and Pro cost in dollars, and when the upgrade pays.
The quick answer
NotebookLM, which Google now brands as Gemini Notebook, is free to start and worth it for most people on the free plan. Standard costs $0 with a Google Account and allows 100 notebooks and 50 sources per notebook. Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month doubles the usage limits and raises the caps to 200 notebooks and 100 sources. Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month, or $199.99 a year, allows 300 sources per notebook and gives 5x more Audio Overviews. Pay for a step up only when you hit a cap you can name.

NotebookLM is Google's AI research tool. You load your own sources into a notebook and ask questions across them. Google describes it as an AI research tool and thinking partner, and the product now sits under the name Gemini Notebook. Google's help center uses that name, and the old notebooklm.google address redirects to notebook.google. People still search for the old name, so this page uses both. The US query "notebooklm pricing" draws about 2,200 searches a month, according to Ahrefs.
The useful question is not whether the product works. It is whether the free plan is enough, and what each paid step buys you. Google sets NotebookLM limits by plan and publishes the notebook and source caps, so the answer depends on how many notebooks and sources you actually use. Every price and limit below comes from Google's own pages, checked on October 10, 2026, and the arithmetic is shown.
NotebookLM limits and prices by Google plan
Prices from Google subscriptions and plan pages, checked October 10, 2026. Limits from Google's Gemini Notebook plan article. Google says the limits may change.
| Plan | Price (USD) | Notebooks | Sources per notebook | Usage limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard (free) | $0 with a Google Account | 100 per user | 50 | Baseline, no figure published |
| Google AI Plus | $4.99/mo (no annual price listed) | 200 per user | 100 | 2x standard |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99/mo or $199.99/yr | 500 per user | 300 | 4x standard, 5x more Audio Overviews |
| Google AI Ultra | From $99.99/mo, billed monthly only | 500 per user | 500 to 600, by plan | 5x or 20x Pro |
What you get
- ✓Free at $0 with a Google Account, with 100 notebooks and 50 sources per notebook.
- ✓Plus at $4.99 a month doubles the usage limits and raises the caps to 200 notebooks and 100 sources.
- ✓Pro at $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year brings 300 sources per notebook and 5x more Audio Overviews.
- ✓Google publishes the notebook and source caps for each plan, so the ceiling is known before you pay.
- ✓The product is built around the sources you load, which suits a long reading list better than a general chat thread.
The trade-offs
- ✕Usage is a multiple of a baseline Google never prints, so you cannot plan your daily queries exactly.
- ✕The product changed name to Gemini Notebook, so older prices and guides can point at the wrong thing.
- ✕Google's pages do not list an annual Plus price, so a yearly Plus cost is a monthly estimate.
- ✕Google says the limits may change, which makes every cap in this review a snapshot.
- ✕The enterprise seat caps are not on the pages we checked, so a team cannot price it from these numbers.
Worth it if…
- →A student or analyst who keeps 20 to 50 sources on one topic and wants them in one place.
- →Anyone who has hit the 100-notebook or 50-source cap, where Plus at $4.99 is the cheapest fix Google sells.
- →People who would use Audio Overviews every week, the clearest reason to consider Pro.
Skip it if…
- →You open the tool a few times a month with a handful of documents. The free plan already covers you.
- →You want a general assistant for drafting, coding or one-off questions more than a source-based research tool.
- →You need a fixed daily query count for a team, which Google does not publish.
The free plan: 100 notebooks and 50 sources each
Start on free. Google's help article lists 100 notebooks per user and 50 sources per notebook on the Standard plan, which costs $0 with a Google Account. That covers a course, a thesis chapter or one client file. Fifty sources in a single notebook is enough for a focused literature review. It is not enough for a year of reading on one topic, and that is the point where the paid plans start to make sense.
The limit most people will notice is usage, and Google does not print a number for it. The usage-limits article describes free as standard limits, a baseline with no figure attached. Plus runs at twice that baseline, Pro at four times, and Ultra at five or twenty times Pro. Quotas refresh every 5 hours, with a weekly cap on top. You cannot count your daily queries in advance, so treat any daily query figure you see on another site as an estimate.
What Plus and Pro change, in dollars
Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month on Google's subscriptions page. It doubles the usage limits and raises the caps to 200 notebooks and 100 sources per notebook. Google's pages do not list an annual Plus price, so budget against the monthly figure until you see the checkout.
Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year, per Google's plan calculator. It gives four times the standard usage, 500 notebooks and 300 sources per notebook, and 5x more Audio Overviews. Ultra starts at $99.99 a month, billed monthly only, and carries 5x or 20x Pro usage with 500 notebooks and 500 to 600 sources per notebook, depending on the plan.
The arithmetic is short. Plus billed monthly costs $59.88 a year (12 x $4.99). Pro costs $239.88 billed monthly (12 x $19.99), or $199.99 on the annual plan, which saves $39.89 a year. The step from Plus to Pro adds $15.00 a month ($19.99 minus $4.99). For that $15 you get 300 more notebooks, 200 more sources per notebook and Pro's 5x more Audio Overviews. If the source cap is the only wall you hit, Plus is the cheap fix. Pro earns its price when you need the 300-source notebooks or the audio features every week.
What the upgrade gets you in practice
Academy data: our prompt library holds 1,752 prompt pages, and 8 of them are titled around NotebookLM: a general set plus study, podcast, source, flashcard, briefing, slide-deck and report prompts. The main NotebookLM prompt page is the place to start. A prompt is not a reason to pay. Upgrade only when the notebooks you keep returning to outgrow the caps above.
Audio Overviews are the feature with the clearest paid multiplier, and Google ties its 5x to Pro. If you would listen to a generated overview of a source set every week, that is the Pro case. If you read the sources yourself, the free plan covers you.
Free, Plus or Pro: a decision rule
Decide from the cap you hit. If you stay under 50 sources in a notebook and under 100 notebooks, stay free. If you regularly go past 50 sources in one notebook, Plus at $4.99 is the cheapest fix Google sells. If you need 300 sources in a notebook, more than 200 notebooks, or audio overviews every week, Pro at $19.99 a month is the plan, or $199.99 billed yearly if you are committed to it.
Teams are a different calculation. Google's enterprise editions start at $21 per seat a month for Gemini Enterprise Business, but the Google pages we checked do not list notebook caps for those seats. Price them separately before you assume the consumer numbers carry over.
NotebookLM against the general assistants
NotebookLM is narrower than a general assistant, and that narrowness is the point. A chat plan handles drafting, coding and one-off questions across everything you do. A notebook holds a fixed set of sources and answers across them, which suits a long reading list better than a chat thread does. If you want breadth, our Claude Pro review and ChatGPT Plus review cover the general plans. If your work already runs in Google's apps, read our Gemini Advanced review.
Google's limits can shift, and the product has already changed its name once. Check Google's current pages before you commit a team or a semester to it.
What to check before you pay
Older guides and promotions still describe the paid notebook limits as NotebookLM Plus. Google's current plan pages do not use that name. They set Gemini Notebook limits by Google AI plan: Plus, Pro and Ultra. Before you pay, read Google's help article on the day you buy, because those caps are the numbers that apply to you, not the figures in an older guide.
The verdict
For most people, NotebookLM is worth it on the free plan and not yet worth $19.99 a month. Standard gives 100 notebooks and 50 sources each at $0. Move to Plus at $4.99 a month once one notebook needs more than 50 sources. Pay for Pro at $19.99 a month only when you need 300 sources in a notebook, more than 200 notebooks, or 5x Audio Overviews every week.
The risk is the naming, not the product. Older guides still quote NotebookLM Plus prices, and a search result can send you to a page built around a plan name that Google's current pages do not use. Read the current plan page and check the cap that matters to you before you pay.
