Is Playground AI worth it in 2026?
Pro is $12 a month on yearly billing. The free plan is a small trial with 3 monthly credits, and its commercial license line came back in August 2026 after a July 2026 snapshot printed non-commercial use.
The quick answer
Playground AI is worth it at $12 a month on yearly billing if you need about 150 credits a month (one credit per standard image; Nano Banana Pro uses 4) with a royalty-free commercial license. The free plan is a trial: its card prints up to 10 images every three hours, its comparison table prints 5 per three-hour rolling window, and it gives 3 monthly credits. Its card went from “Non-commercial use” in July 2026 to a royalty-free commercial license by August. Pro Plus is $36 a month on yearly billing for 1,000 credits, and it works out to less than half the cost per credit of Pro at full use of its credits.

Playground AI’s free card printed 500 images a day in January 2024, 10 images a day in October 2024 and 10 images every three hours in July 2026, and its card went from “Non-commercial use” on July 11, 2026 to “Commercial use World-wide, royalty free license” by August 21, 2026. The windows differ, so the figures are not like-for-like: the 2024 figures are daily caps, while the 2026 plan uses a rolling three-hour window plus 3 monthly credits shared across models.
Pro is $12 a month on yearly billing ($144 a year) as of October 25, 2026, the same yearly figure the January 13, 2024 snapshot printed. The domain has changed too: playground.com now redirects to playgroundai.com, so the 2024 snapshots are of the older address. The Turbo tier printed $36 a month yearly in January 2024, and the 2026 Pro Plus tier prints the same $36, with 1,000 monthly credits in place of 2,000 images a day.

What you get
- ✓Commercial use on the free card: the live page and the August 21, 2026 capture print a royalty-free license there. The July 11, 2026 capture did not, so check the card before relying on it for client work.
- ✓$12 a month on yearly billing buys 150 credits with the commercial license included.
- ✓Pro Plus works out to about 3.6 cents a credit at the yearly price and full use of its 1,000 credits, against 8 cents on Pro.
- ✓You keep your outputs: the terms say you own the Assets you create.
- ✓A 4.9 score on iOS from 5,970 ratings, as printed on the App Store listing.
The trade-offs
- ✕The free allowance has changed shape: 500 images a day (January 2024), 10 a day (October 2024), and 10 every three hours plus 3 monthly credits (2026). It is not a steady decline, and the windows differ.
- ✕The free card changed in 2026: “Non-commercial use” in the July 11 snapshot, commercial again by August 21.
- ✕Cancelling does not refund amounts already billed, so the monthly toggle limits what is at risk.
- ✕The free card and its table disagree on the three-hour window: 10 images on the card, 5 in the table.
- ✕G2 prints 4.4 from 549 reviews, 0.5 below the App Store’s 4.9, and SourceForge’s 2.5 comes from 2 reviews.
Worth it if…
- →You need a royalty-free commercial license and about 150 credits a month (one credit per standard image; Nano Banana Pro uses 4 credits per generation), which is Pro at $12 a month on yearly billing.
- →You switch between several models, since Pro lists Muse Image, Nano Banana, GPT Image 2, GPT Image 2.5 and Seedream on one credit pool.
- →You edit a lot of images, since Pro includes upscaling and background removal.
Skip it if…
- →You want to make a few images a month for free: the free plan gives 3 credits a month.
- →You need a commercial license you can count on at the free tier, since its commercial line changed in 2026.
- →You need a refund option, because the terms give no refund or credit for amounts already billed or paid on cancellation.
How has the free plan changed?
The January 13, 2024 snapshot of the older site printed “Create 500 images per day” and “Use images commercially” on the free card, and an October 6, 2024 capture (20241006205157) printed “Create 10 images per day” with the same commercial line. The July 11, 2026 snapshot of the current site printed “Create up to 10 images every 3 hours”, “3 monthly generations across Nano Banana, GPT Image 2, and Seedream”, then “Non-commercial use” and “No royalty-free license”.
The August 21, 2026 snapshot prints the commercial line back on the same card, so the change falls between those two dates. The live card prints “Commercial use World-wide, royalty free license” and lists Muse Image and GPT Image 2.5 in its model list.
The free card says 10 images every three hours, while the comparison table gives 5 per three-hour rolling window. The card and the table disagree on the same window, so plan with 5 until they agree. At 10 per window the free card allows up to 80 images in 24 hours if used continuously.
How has the price changed?
Pro printed the same pair of figures in the January 2024 and July 2026 snapshots: $15 a month billed monthly, and $12 a month billed yearly ($144 a year). The October 2024 capture printed only the $15 monthly price.
The top tier printed $45 monthly and $36 a month yearly ($432 a year) under the name Turbo in January 2024, with 2,000 images a day on Stable Diffusion. The July 2026 snapshot prints the same $45 and $36 for Pro Plus, now with 1,000 monthly credits.
What does the commercial license say?
Playground AI’s terms of service grant you “a non-exclusive, limited, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, non-assignable, freely revocable license to access and use the Service for business or personal use”. They add that you “own all Assets you create with the Services” and that Playground assigns those rights to you “for your personal or commercial use”. The page prints “Last updated: November 5, 2025”.
The same terms give the company a license in return: “a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, sublicensable, no-charge, royalty-free, irrevocable copyright license” to the prompts and images you input and to Assets the service produces. They also let other users access your publicly available Assets through the service. For client work, read that clause before you publish anything.
The terms also state: “If you cancel your subscription, you will not receive a refund or credit for any amounts that have already been billed or paid.” A monthly plan limits what is at risk to one month.
What do users say about Playground AI?
Toolradar prints G2 at 4.4 from 549 reviews, Capterra at 4 from 1 review and SourceForge at 2.5 from 2 reviews, with its ratings block dated September 17, 2026, and a combined 4.1 from 552 reviews without showing how it is weighted.
The App Store listing for the iOS app, Playground: AI Design & Editor, prints 4.9 from 5,970 ratings as of October 25, 2026. The iOS score rests on far more ratings but covers the phone app alone, while G2’s 4.4 covers the wider product on 549 reviews. SourceForge’s 2.5 rests on just 2 reviews, so it tells you little. The 49 most recent US App Store reviews average 3.6 stars, and five of the seven dated 2026 are 1 or 2 stars, several citing glitches, errors and failed edits.
How does it compare with Krea in dollars?
Krea’s pricing page prints Free at $0 with 100 units a day, and Pro at $21 a month beside a struck-through $35 and a “40% off” badge on its Yearly toggle, as of October 25, 2026. Krea counts units rather than images, so its 20,000 Pro units a month cannot be set against Playground’s 150 credits image for image.
Per credit, Pro works out to 8 cents at the yearly price and Pro Plus to about 3.6 cents at full use of its 1,000 credits, counting a standard model generation as one credit. At 151 credits Pro Plus costs about 24 cents a credit, so it pays off only at high volume.
Academy data: of the 1,777 prompt pages in our library, 8 have “image” in the slug, and none is about Playground AI.
The verdict
Playground AI is worth paying for at $12 a month on yearly billing if you need about 150 credits a month with a royalty-free license for client work. For client work that needs a license, this is the plan to price first. Pay monthly first: cancelling gives no refund for amounts already billed, so a monthly plan limits what is at risk, and the free plan is a trial rather than a working allowance.
Skip the free plan for regular work. Its free card has printed 500 images a day, then 10 a day, then 10 every three hours plus 3 monthly credits, and its commercial line changed in 2026. Pro Plus is cheaper per credit only if you use most of its 1,000 credits: about 3.6 cents a credit at full use, against 8 cents on Pro.
Two things would change this answer: the free card’s commercial line moving again, which it did once in 2026, and Pro’s $12 yearly price moving, which the January 2024 and July 2026 snapshots both print.
