Is Speechify worth it in 2026?

The short answer: yes for a daily listener on the annual plan, but no to Premium for anyone who needs audio in a monetized video. Here is what each plan costs and which one you need.

By Louis Corneloup·Updated October 14, 2026

The quick answer

Speechify is worth it for daily listening on the annual Premium plan at $139 a year, but not for audio you publish. Premium reads PDFs, articles and documents aloud at up to 5x speed with 1000+ natural voices, under a personal-use license. Commercial audio needs a paid Studio plan, and Studio Starter costs $100 a year with commercial usage rights. The free reader has 10 voices that Speechify itself calls robotic, so treat it as a trial before you pay.

Speechify sells two products under one brand, and only one of them is licensed for commercial use. The usual question is whether the annual Premium plan beats the free reader, but that comparison skips the license, which decides which plan you need. The reader turns your PDFs, web pages and documents into audio for a commute or a reading list.

This breakdown uses the prices and terms on Speechify's own pages, checked in October 2026. It covers the free tier, what Premium adds, why Studio is a separate purchase, and how the alternatives compare.

What you get

  • ✓The annual plan saves 60% against the monthly price, which makes it a modest monthly cost for a daily listener.
  • ✓1000+ natural voices and 60+ languages on Premium, against the robotic sounding voices on the free reader.
  • ✓Playback up to 5x on Premium, against 1.5x on the free tier.
  • ✓Premium bundles Scan & Listen, AI summaries and chats, cloud integrations with Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive, and Voice Typing in one subscription.
  • ✓Studio Starter's annual plan is the cheapest Speechify plan with commercial rights, and it costs less than Premium's annual price.

The trade-offs

  • ✕Premium's license is personal and non-commercial, so its audio cannot go into anything you sell or monetize.
  • ✕The free reader's voices are, in Speechify's own words, "robotic sounding", so the free tier does not show you what Premium sounds like.
  • ✕Neither reader plan publishes a word, minute or listening cap, so you cannot forecast the value from your usage.
  • ✕Studio's annual plans buy 24 hours (Starter) or 96 hours (Creator) of voiceover a year. Heavy producers will run out.
  • ✕Two products under one brand. Premium and Studio are licensed and priced differently, and the wrong purchase is easy to make.

Worth it if…

  • →You listen to documents, articles or PDFs most workdays and want the faster playback and the wider voice library.
  • →You want one reader across your browser and phone, with the cloud integrations included.
  • →You will test the voices during the free trial and pay only if the natural voices hold up for you.
  • →You are buying for personal listening, not for audio you publish.

Skip it if…

  • →You listen a few times a month. The free reader covers occasional use, and the annual price is hard to justify.
  • →You need audio for a monetized video, podcast, course or ad. Buy Studio Starter or Creator, not Premium.
  • →You need hundreds of hours of narration a year. Studio's annual plans top out at 96 hours.
  • →You want to generate new audio from a script in many styles. ElevenLabs fits that job better.

What Speechify costs, plan by plan

Speechify sells two separate subscriptions. The reader plans read text you already have aloud. The Studio plans generate voiceovers for new audio. Each has a free tier, a monthly price and a cheaper annual price.

Premium is $29 a month or $139 a year, and the pricing page labels the yearly option "SAVE 60%". Paid monthly for twelve months it would cost $348, so the annual plan saves $209 and works out to about $11.58 a month.

Studio Starter is $19 a month for 7,200 credits, about 2 hours of voiceover, or $100 a year for 86,400 credits, about 24 hours. Studio Creator is $49 a month for 8 hours of voiceover or $300 a year for 96 hours. Speechify equates 600 credits with 10 minutes of voiceover, so a credit is roughly one second of audio.

Per voiceover hour, the annual plans come out at about $4.17 on Starter and $3.13 on Creator, against $9.50 and $6.13 paid monthly. These are our calculations from the listed figures.

The free plan: what you actually get

The reader's free tier lets you listen at up to 1.5x, with 10 voices that Speechify's pricing page describes as "robotic sounding". That is enough to decide whether the reader suits you. It is not enough to hear the voices you would want for an hour.

Neither reader plan lists a word, minute or storage cap. Without a published limit you cannot forecast when you would hit one, which makes the usage side of the value question hard to settle from the pricing page.

Studio's free plan is a different product. It gives 600 credits, which Speechify equates to about 10 minutes of voiceover, plus access to its 1,000+ realistic voices. It carries "No commercial usage rights", so use it to test voices, not to publish them.

The free trial is the real test. Speechify's Terms set it at three days unless the signup says otherwise, and it converts to a paid subscription at the then-current price unless you cancel first. The signup screen states the length that applies to you, so read it before you sign up.

Premium: is the annual price worth it for listening?

Premium is the plan the reader is built around. On top of the free tier it adds 1000+ natural voices, 60+ languages, playback up to 5x, Scan & Listen, AI summaries and chats, integrations with Google Drive, Dropbox and Microsoft OneDrive, Voice Typing, AI Podcasts and a Voice AI Assistant. If you read most days, those features are the value. If you only need basic read-aloud, you are paying for features you will not use.

The arithmetic is short. On the annual plan the cost is a modest monthly sum for someone who listens every workday. For someone who listens a few times a month, the annual price is hard to justify, and the free reader covers the occasional document.

Premium's AI Podcasts feature does not change the license. The Terms do not carve it out of the personal license, so treat anything generated on Premium as personal use. Before the trial ends, listen to the voices on the material you care about, because the pricing page does not say which voices are included.

Academy data: our podcast script prompt page holds 30 prompts for spoken scripts, so a draft can be ready before you open any voice tool.

Commercial use: the detail that trips buyers up

Speechify's Terms license the Services for personal non-commercial use. Section 4.4 then says the Services, with one exception, "are not intended for your commercial use". The exception is Speechify Voice Over Studio, whose AI voice overs may be used for commercial purposes.

The Studio pricing page matches. Starter lists "Commercial usage rights" and Creator includes everything in Starter, while Studio's free plan says "No commercial usage rights". So Premium does not cover a monetized YouTube channel, a paid course or an ad, however cheap it looks next to Studio.

The cheapest Speechify plan with commercial rights is Studio Starter at $100 a year. The catch is volume. Starter's yearly plan buys 24 hours of voiceover and Creator's buys 96. Heavy producers will run through that, and at that point price per hour and a different generator matter more than the plan name.

How the alternatives compare

ElevenLabs generates new voice audio from scripts you write, so it is the comparison to make when the job is producing audio rather than reading it. Its free plan gives 10,000 credits a month with no commercial license. Starter at $6 a month adds the commercial license, and billed yearly the effective price is $5 a month. Credits are not the same unit as Studio's voiceover minutes, so compare the hours you need on each pricing page before deciding.

NaturalReader is the closest like-for-like reader app. Its homepage advertises a free forever plan and separate Personal, Commercial and EDU plans, so a business user should confirm which plan covers commercial use before buying.

Microsoft Edge's Read aloud is built into the browser and also runs in the Edge apps on iOS and Android. Microsoft's feature page lists no price. It works offline with fewer voices. For browser-only listening, try it before paying for Premium.

The verdict

For a daily listener, Speechify Premium on the annual plan is worth it, provided you check the voices during the trial and accept the personal-use license. The reader is the product.

For creators the answer flips. Premium does not license commercial use, so the cheapest legal Speechify option for a monetized video is Studio Starter on its annual plan, which includes 24 hours of voiceover. If that volume is too small, price ElevenLabs and other generators on the hours you need, because credits and Speechify's minutes are different units.

Better alternatives?

If it is not the right fit, these are worth a look.

ElevenLabs

Generates new voice audio from scripts. Starter at $6 a month includes a commercial license, and the free plan does not. Best when the job is making audio, not reading it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Speechify worth it in 2026?▾

For a daily listener, yes. The annual Premium plan adds 1000+ natural voices, 5x playback and cloud integrations for a modest monthly cost. For occasional use the free reader is enough. For audio you plan to publish or monetize, Premium is the wrong plan because its license is personal and non-commercial.

How much does Speechify cost?▾

Premium is $29 a month or $139 a year. The free reader is $0. Studio Starter is $19 a month and Studio Creator is $49 a month, with annual options on both. Prices are those shown on Speechify's pricing pages, checked in October 2026.

Is there a free version of Speechify?▾

Yes. The reader's free plan lets you listen at up to 1.5x with 10 robotic sounding voices and text to speech features only. Studio's free plan gives 600 credits, about 10 minutes of voiceover, with no commercial rights.

Can I use Speechify audio in a monetized YouTube video?▾

Not from Premium. Speechify's Terms restrict the Services other than Voice Over Studio to personal, non-commercial use. Studio Starter includes commercial usage rights for its AI voiceovers, so that is the plan to buy for a channel.

Is the Speechify free trial really three days?▾

The Terms set a three-day free trial unless a different period is stated at signup. The trial converts to a paid subscription at the then-current price unless you cancel first.

Is Speechify better than ElevenLabs?▾

They do different jobs. Speechify reads text you already have aloud, while ElevenLabs generates new voice audio from scripts. For commercial narration, ElevenLabs Starter at $6 a month includes a commercial license, so compare it when you need to produce audio rather than listen to it.

Is the annual Speechify plan a better deal?▾

Yes, if you would keep paying for a year. Premium's annual price saves $209 against twelve monthly payments, and Studio Starter's annual price saves $128 against twelve monthly payments of $19.
