Is Wondershare Filmora worth it in 2026?

For a creator who publishes weekly, the Advanced plan at US$59.99 a year is the option to compare. The lifetime-license history and the perpetual license terms decide the rest.

By Louis Corneloup·Updated October 27, 2026

The quick answer

Advanced costs US$59.99 a year and the perpetual license US$79.99 once, but buyers of Filmora’s “lifetime” licenses were asked for an annual fee for version 12 in late 2022. Toolradar’s aggregate is 4.0 from 1,362 reviews, with SourceForge at 2.1 from 14. Filmora sold “lifetime” licenses, then asked those buyers for an annual fee for version 12. A Hacker News comment dated December 29, 2022 says Wondershare sold licenses it called "lifetime" and then broke its word on free updates. nofilmschool’s report of January 30, 2023 describes the same change. Read the license terms before you pay for anything marked lifetime.

What happened to Filmora’s lifetime licenses?

When Filmora 12 debuted in late 2022, Wondershare moved lifetime buyers to an annual subscription fee, according to nofilmschool. The same report says the company later said it would honor earlier lifetime buyers, and that it called the matter a misunderstanding.

The Hacker News thread is titled “Filmora is no longer supporting user’s Lifetime licenses,” and its comment of December 29, 2022 is the dated voice on the change. It states that Wondershare sold licenses it called "lifetime" and that the company broke its word on updates it had called completely free.

The current terms on the pricing page are the part to read. The perpetual card lists updates within Filmora 16. The FAQ says the perpetual plan does not include future versions and that you may need to pay an additional lower-cost fee to resubscribe for support and upgrades. It also says the perpetual license is device-specific: a Windows license works only on Windows devices, and a Mac license only on Mac devices.

What Filmora costs in US dollars

The pricing page prints an annual price for Basic and Advanced, and both cards say they renew automatically and can be cancelled at any time. Advanced is the plan that matters for a weekly publisher. It adds 10 GB of cloud storage against 1 GB on Basic, and 1,000 Filmora AI Credits a month for 20+ AI features. The FAQ says subscription credits are issued every 30 days from the purchase date, and unused credits are reclaimed when the new allowance arrives.

Basic carries the same 1 GB of storage as the perpetual license and 500 free AI Mate conversations, and the cards also print a 7-day free trial of Filmora Creative Assets that renews afterward. The free plan covers basic editing and export, but the FAQ says watermarks are added to exported files. The paid cards list export without watermark. The page also states a 30-day money-back guarantee that should be subject to Wondershare’s Refund Policy.

How does Filmora compare on price?

CapCut’s pricing page lists Pro at US$19.99 a month billed monthly, or US$179.99 a year billed yearly, and Ultra at US$79 a month. Twelve monthly payments of Pro come to US$239.88, about four times the Advanced annual price. Blackmagic Design’s product page shows DaVinci Resolve Studio 21 at US$236 now, down from US$295, presented as a purchase. That is close to the US$239.88 that twelve monthly payments of CapCut Pro come to, and about three times Filmora’s US$79.99 perpetual license.

Descript’s pricing page offers Monthly and Annual billing per person: Hobbyist at $24 a month billed monthly or $16 a month billed annually, and Creator at $35 monthly or $24 annually. Set against those per-month figures, the Advanced annual price works out to a monthly cost below either of them, while the perpetual license is one payment with no renewal.

What do users say about Filmora?

Toolradar’s Filmora listing shows an update date of September 29, 2026, and its ratings are dated September 17, 2026. Toolradar prints an aggregate of 4 out of 5 from 1,362 reviews across G2, Capterra and SourceForge. Its own platform figures are G2 at 4.4 from 612 reviews, Capterra at 4.5 from 736, and SourceForge at 2.1 from 14, and they do not average to that 4.0, so the aggregate is Toolradar’s figure, not ours. The SourceForge sample is small, so read the split as a signal, not a verdict.

The US App Store listing prints 4.7 with 90K ratings. That figure covers the editing app as a whole, not the license question.

The independent coverage cited here is about license terms, not editing features. The one dated user voice is the December 29, 2022 Hacker News comment above.

The verdict

Pay for Advanced on annual billing if you publish weekly. At US$59.99 a year it includes 10 GB of storage, 1,000 AI credits a month, and export without watermark. A weekly publisher may use those allowances.

Skip the perpetual license if you want future versions. At US$79.99 it costs about one and a third years of Advanced (79.99 divided by 59.99), and the page says it covers only updates within Filmora 16, on the platform (Windows or Mac) the license was bought for.

Stay on the free plan if you edit occasionally. It covers basic editing, with a watermark on exports. If you want monthly billing, CapCut Pro is printed at US$19.99 a month, or US$239.88 over twelve months.

What would change this: a weekly publisher who needs no AI credits could stay on Basic at US$49.99 a year.
