AI Tool Review

Is Loom worth it in 2026?

What the free plan’s 25 videos and 5-minute cap allow, what Business and Business + AI cost a teacher or a remote team, and why legacy customers saw their bill jump.

By AI Academy editorial team·Published November 6, 2026

The quick answer

Loom is worth paying for if you record more than a few short videos a week. The free Starter plan caps recordings at 5 minutes and 25 videos per person. Business costs $18 a user a month billed monthly or $180 a year billed annually; Business + AI costs $24 monthly or $240 a year and adds auto titles, summaries and filler-word removal. Legacy customers moving into Atlassian billing report increases from $10 to $18 a user a month. Educators can get 75% off through Atlassian’s Classroom license.

Short answer: the free plan is enough for a handful of quick walkthroughs. Anyone who records longer lessons or more than 25 videos should pay, and Business at $18 a user a month (billed monthly) is the plan to start with. The $6 step-up to Business + AI is worth it only if you publish videos other people search and skim. Since Loom moved into Atlassian billing, long-time customers report their price going from $10 to $18 a user a month.

What you get

  • ✓Fast to record and share: a link replaces a meeting for walkthroughs and feedback.
  • ✓Useful free tier: 25 videos of 5 minutes and unlimited meeting recording length.
  • ✓Big jump at Business: unlimited length, 4K, downloads, trimming and no branding.
  • ✓Education discount: 75% off list price through Atlassian’s Classroom license.
  • ✓14-day trial and refund window: room to test Business + AI before paying.

The trade-offs

  • ✕5-minute cap on free: too short for lessons or demos.
  • ✕Legacy price rise: users report $10 going to $18 a user a month after integration.
  • ✕Creator Lite retired: free contributor seats become paid seats unless removed.
  • ✕AI is a separate tier: $6 more per user a month on monthly billing.
  • ✕Annual tiers via Atlassian: per-user math does not always match the invoice.

Worth it if…

  • →Remote teams that replace status meetings and walkthroughs with recorded video.
  • →Teachers who record lessons longer than 5 minutes, especially with a Classroom license.
  • →Support, sales and product people who send many personalized explainer videos.

Skip it if…

  • →You record a few short clips a month: Starter covers it.
  • →You need polished, edited video for customers: a full editor such as Descript fits better.
  • →You mainly want meeting notes: a meeting assistant such as Fathom is built for that.

Is the free Starter plan enough?

The Starter plan allows 25 videos per person, each up to 5 minutes, at up to 720p, with unlimited screenshots and transcripts in more than 50 languages. Meeting recordings have no length limit. Up to 50 members can join a free workspace.

Five minutes is enough for a bug report, a pull request walkthrough or a reply to a client question. It is not enough for a lesson, a product demo or onboarding. The 25-video cap is the other limit: someone who records daily fills it in about five weeks, then has to delete or archive old videos to keep recording.

If you record a few short clips a month and do not care about the Loom branding on the video page, stay free. Once you start splitting a ten-minute explanation into two videos, it is time for Business.

What Business and Business + AI cost a teacher and a remote team

Our arithmetic at list prices. A teacher recording three 10-minute lesson explainers a week needs Business: $216 a year on monthly billing (12 x $18) or $180 on annual billing. Atlassian’s Classroom license lists Loom Business and Business + AI at 75% off list price for eligible teachers and students, which would bring annual Business to $45 a year. The discount requires an application, so confirm the final figure at checkout.

A five-person remote team on annual billing pays $900 a year for Business or $1,200 for Business + AI: $300 more for the AI features, or $60 per person. On monthly billing the gap is $6 per person per month. Loom’s Atlassian pricing page notes that annual plans are charged by the user tier closest to your headcount, so a small team’s annual bill can differ slightly from a straight multiplication.

When does the AI step-up pay back? At a $30 hourly rate, by our arithmetic, $6 a month buys back 12 minutes. If auto titles, summaries, chapters and filler-word removal save you more than that across a month of videos, upgrade. If you mostly send quick internal replies that nobody rewatches, they will not.

How has Loom’s price changed under Atlassian?

Atlassian’s integration help page, first published November 3, 2025 and updated August 18, 2026, says Loom “adjusted pricing for new customers” in 2024, and that as each workspace joins Atlassian, “existing customers will see their first price increase.” Legacy customers move to current list prices from their first billing date after integration. To the question “Can I stay on my current pricing?” the page answers “No.”

Users have posted what that looks like. A Hacker News submission from July 3, 2026 quotes a Loom email moving the price from $10 to $18 per user per month. A post on the Atlassian Community forum describes the same move from $10 to $18 and asks how to export videos before deciding whether to stay.

The same page discontinues the free Creator Lite member role. Creator Lite users are upgraded to paid Creator seats, with a grace period until the next billing date to deactivate those you do not want to pay for. Teams with many occasional contributors should audit their member list before that date, or the bill grows automatically.

What do users say about Loom?

On the US App Store, the Loom iOS app holds a 4.8 out of 5 from 19,334 ratings as of October 29, 2026, which reflects how easy recording is on a phone more than pricing.

Sentiment about the business side is cooler. A March 3, 2026 Ask HN post says that since the Atlassian acquisition, “pricing went up, reliability went down,” and asks what people switched to. These are individual reports, not a survey, but they line up with the price changes Atlassian documents.

Loom’s own pricing FAQ makes the case for the AI plan with its own figures: 67% of users keep the auto-generated title, and AI-generated titles, summaries and chapters bring “18% more viewer engagement.” Those are vendor numbers, not independent measurements. On privacy, the FAQ says OpenAI receives transcript text, not video or audio, to generate titles and summaries.

Trial, refunds and switching

Loom offers a 14-day free trial of Business + AI. Atlassian’s pricing FAQ adds a refund window: monthly subscriptions within the first paid month after the trial, annual subscriptions within 30 days of payment. Annual billing saves up to 17% over monthly, per the pricing page.

Before committing, check two practical points. Business adds video download, so you can export your library if you leave later. And if your team already pays for Jira or Confluence, buying Loom through Atlassian keeps billing in one admin console; Atlassian’s Teamwork Collection bundles Loom with those apps.

Academy data: of the prompt packs in our library, one is built for Loom: the ChatGPT prompts for Loom, 16 prompts in four categories covering when to record, scripting, distribution and practice.

The verdict

Loom Business is worth $18 a user a month (or $15 on annual billing) for anyone who records more than a few videos a week or needs videos longer than 5 minutes. The free plan stays a good option for occasional quick replies.

Business + AI earns its extra $6 when videos are watched by many people who skim titles and chapters. For legacy customers, the move to $18 is the moment to count active users and remove unused seats. What would change the answer: a longer free recording limit, or an AI tier folded into Business.
