AI Tool Review

Is Napkin AI worth it in 2026?

The short version: the free plan is enough to test it, but every free export carries the Napkin logo. Here are the real numbers on credits, the $9 Plus plan, commercial use, and when a diagram tool is the better buy.

By Louis Corneloup·Updated October 17, 2026

The quick answer

Napkin AI is worth it at $9 per person a month billed yearly ($12 billed monthly) for anyone who publishes visuals. The free plan gives 500 AI credits a week, unlimited editing and PNG or PDF export, but every free export carries the Napkin logo. Plus removes the logo, adds PPT and SVG export and gives 10,000 credits a month. Pro at $22 per person a month billed yearly mainly pays off if you need your own fonts or a full brand system. The strongest alternative is Eraser, whose Starter plan costs $15 per member a month billed annually and suits diagrams you maintain as code.

Napkin AI turns pasted text into visuals: flowcharts, mind maps, data charts, infographics and diagrams. Short answer: yes if you publish visuals more than a few times a month, and the cheapest paid plan worth buying is Plus at $9 per person a month billed yearly ($12 billed monthly). The free plan is a trial, not a publishing tool, because every exported visual carries the Napkin logo.

This review uses what Napkin's own pricing page and help center say in October 2026. It covers what each plan includes, the credit math behind the free tier, the commercial-use terms, and how Eraser and Whimsical compare on price. Napkin also lists a Slides product in beta, which this review does not cover in depth.

What you get

  • ✓500 AI credits a week on Free, with unlimited editing and PNG or PDF export, enough to judge the output before you pay.
  • ✓Direct edits cost nothing: colours, icons, shapes and resizing do not use credits.
  • ✓$9 per person a month billed yearly removes the logo and adds PPT and SVG export, the lowest paid entry of the three tools compared here.
  • ✓You paste text and pick a visual, so no prompt writing is needed.
  • ✓Generated visuals can be used commercially under the terms, including marketing and business presentations.
  • ✓Unlimited file import on Free, within Napkin’s size and processing limits.

The trade-offs

  • ✕Every Free export carries the Napkin logo, and the toggle stays locked on.
  • ✕PPT and SVG export need Plus.
  • ✕Free credits refresh weekly and do not roll over, and each new set of suggestions uses credits again.
  • ✕Visual generation is not available on mobile yet, according to the homepage FAQ.
  • ✕Slides is labelled beta on the pricing page’s product menu.
  • ✕Pro’s credit top-up price is not published, and there are no nonprofit or student discounts.

Worth it if…

  • →You publish visuals more than a few times a month and need them logo-free, which means Plus.
  • →You want flowcharts, mind maps or data charts from pasted text without learning a diagram editor.
  • →You run a team of a few people who want a shared credit allowance on a per-seat budget.
  • →You build decks and need PPT export.

Skip it if…

  • →You make a visual a month or less. The free plan covers an occasional test, but its logo is only acceptable for internal drafts.
  • →You need your own fonts or a full brand system, which means Pro at $22 a month billed yearly.
  • →You maintain diagrams as structured code, where Eraser’s diagram-as-code is the better fit.
  • →You need to generate visuals on your phone. Generation is desktop only for now.

What the free plan gives you, and where it runs out

The Free plan costs $0 and includes 500 AI credits a week, unlimited visual editing, unlimited import of PPT, DOC, PDF, HTML and MD files, and unlimited PNG and PDF export. Napkin's help center says visual generation uses roughly one credit per word selected, so a 50-word passage costs about 50 credits and the weekly allowance covers about ten passages of that length. The same article says each generation has a minimum and maximum cost, and it does not publish those limits.

The catch is the watermark. Napkin’s help article says free exports always carry the Napkin logo, and the toggle stays locked on. Credits also do not roll over, so an unused week is lost. Colour, icon and shape edits cost nothing, but regenerating suggestions uses credits again. For testing the product, that is plenty. For anything a client or reader sees under your name, the logo is the reason to upgrade, not the credit count.

What the $9 Plus plan adds, and what a team pays

Plus costs $9 per person a month billed yearly, or $12 billed monthly. Paying yearly saves $36 per person, which is the 25% discount Napkin advertises ($108 against $144 a year). For that you get 10,000 credits a month (about 200 passages of 50 words), the Napkin logo removed from exports, unlimited PPT and SVG export, three brand styles and bold icons. The Free plan's export list covers PNG and PDF only, so PPT and SVG are the features that matter if the visuals go into a deck or a design tool.

Teams pay per seat. Napkin's FAQ says a paid plan charges for each member who accepts an invitation, and the help center says paid Teamspaces share the credit allowance across members. Five Plus seats billed yearly therefore cost $540 a year, and if the shared allowance adds up as the help center implies, they pool 50,000 credits a month. Napkin's FAQ also says it offers no nonprofit or student discounts, and Enterprise pricing is quote-only.

Pro at $22 is for branding and fonts, not for volume alone

Pro costs $22 per person a month billed yearly, or $30 billed monthly, which is $264 a year against $360. It triples Plus's allowance to 30,000 credits a month and adds exclusive designs, unlimited custom branding and the ability to upload your own fonts. The pricing page also lists optional credit top-ups under Pro. It does not publish a top-up price, and the FAQ only says extra credits can be bought, so ask before you count on them.

Choose Pro for the brand system, not the volume. Plus allows three brand styles and no custom fonts, so a brand that needs its own typefaces needs Pro whatever its usage. If your need is more generations, Plus is the cheaper step to try first. Work out your own passage count per month before you pay for the bigger allowance: at roughly 50 credits per 50-word passage, Plus covers about 200 passages per seat.

Can you use the visuals commercially?

Yes, with one limit. Napkin's terms (last updated 14 September 2026) say you keep whatever rights you have in the generated visuals, and they allow commercial resale, marketing materials and business presentations. The help center adds that complete visuals can go on websites, in presentations and books, and in commercial applications. The limit is the parts. Napkin keeps the individual icons, illustrations and templates inside a visual, and you may not pull them out and use them separately.

Two cautions. The terms say similar inputs can produce similar outputs, and other users may receive substantially similar visuals, so there is no guarantee of uniqueness. And the logo is the real commercial issue on the free plan: a Napkin mark on a client deck or a published graphic is a brand decision you cannot undo after the fact. Read the terms, then choose the plan that matches where the visual will appear.

Napkin against Eraser and Whimsical on price

Napkin is not the only text-to-diagram tool with a free tier. Eraser gives its free plan 3 files and 3 AI diagrams. Its Starter plan is $15 per member a month billed annually ($20 monthly), with 40 AI credits and private files. Business is $45 per member a month billed annually ($60 monthly), with 250 AI credits and unlimited version history. Eraser includes diagram-as-code on every plan, which Napkin's pricing page does not mention. Whimsical gives its free plan 10 AI credits per member and unlimited boards, and its Pro plan is $10 per editor a month on annual billing, with Business at $20.

The units differ, so compare what you can make rather than the raw numbers. Napkin's 500 weekly credits cover about ten 50-word passages, Eraser's free plan covers three AI diagrams, and Whimsical's covers 10 credits per member. On the paid entry tier, Napkin Plus at $9 a month billed yearly is the lowest of the three. Napkin's pitch is paste and pick, while Eraser and Whimsical lead with diagrams you edit as structure. If your work is mostly flowcharts you maintain over time, those two are the better fit. For the design-template side of the question, see our Canva Pro review.

Write the text first, then paste it in

Napkin works from your text rather than a prompt. Its homepage says you paste or import writing and then pick a generated visual, so the expensive part is the words you select, at roughly one credit each. Drafting the structure in a chat assistant first, then pasting only the final sentences into Napkin, keeps credits for the visual rather than for rewrites.

Academy data: the AI Academy prompt library holds 180 Claude prompts across five pages for the structures Napkin draws: 60 for infographics, and 30 each for diagrams, flowcharts, mind maps and charts. The pages were last updated on 28 August 2026. Use them to outline the content in Claude, then paste the outline into Napkin. Napkin does not use the prompts itself.

The verdict

For anyone who publishes visuals, Plus at $9 per person a month billed yearly is the first plan worth paying for. It removes the watermark, adds PPT and SVG export and gives 10,000 credits a month, roughly 200 passages of 50 words. The free plan is a fair test: 500 credits a week, unlimited editing, and PNG or PDF export. Its logo on every file is the reason it stops at testing.

Two honest caveats, plus one trap to avoid. Pro only earns its $22 a month billed yearly if you need your own fonts or a full brand system, or if you truly outgrow 10,000 credits. And if your work is mostly flowcharts you edit as structure, Eraser at $15 per member a month billed annually fits better, while Whimsical's Pro at $10 per editor is the lower-priced diagram option. The waste to avoid is paying for Plus and then regenerating suggestions until one fits, because each new set spends credits.
