Is NovelAI worth it in 2026?
What Tablet, Scroll and Opus buy a fiction writer, how much story each tier remembers, and where Sudowrite or a general chatbot is the better spend.
The quick answer
NovelAI is worth it for genre fiction writers who build worlds and want unlimited text generation at a flat price: Tablet is $10, Scroll $15 and Opus $25 per 30 days. The tier mostly decides how much story the AI remembers, from 8,192 tokens on Tablet to 28,672 on Opus. Its prices have not moved since at least May 2023. Writers who want editing help and chapter structure should look at Sudowrite instead.
Short answer: NovelAI’s prices have held at $10, $15 and $25 a month since at least May 2023, per a dated archive copy of its subscription page, while the story memory on the top tier grew from 8,192 to 28,672 tokens. For a fiction writer who drafts a lot, that makes Opus a better deal today than it was two years ago.
NovelAI is a storytelling editor with a Lorebook for characters and places, plus an anime-style image generator. Every paid tier includes unlimited text generation and text-to-speech. What changes between tiers is memory, the image allowance and which models you can pick, so the right tier depends on how long your stories run.
The catch is the format. NovelAI is a co-writing sandbox, not an editor that critiques chapters. If you want developmental feedback or a manuscript workspace, the money may go further elsewhere.

What you get
- ✓Flat, stable pricing: $10, $15 and $25 a month, unchanged in archive copies from May 2023 to October 2026.
- ✓Unlimited text on every paid tier: no credits or word caps on generation.
- ✓Lorebook: keyword-triggered world notes keep characters and places consistent.
- ✓Opus memory grew: 28,672 tokens today versus 8,192 in January 2025, at the same $25.
- ✓Encrypted stories: the FAQ says staff cannot read them.
The trade-offs
- ✕Small memory on Tablet: 8,192 tokens fills fast once Lorebook entries load.
- ✕No editing feedback: no developmental or line edits, unlike Sudowrite’s upper plans.
- ✕Plain-text export, no chapter structure: flagged in Fast.io’s 2026 ranking.
- ✕No refunds and no annual discount: billing is every 30 days at full price.
- ✕Lost password, lost stories: local encryption means the company cannot recover them.
Worth it if…
- →Genre fiction writers drafting long stories with large casts, who will use the Lorebook.
- →Writers who generate a lot of text and want a flat price instead of credits.
- →Hobbyists who also want character art and will use Opus image generation.
Skip it if…
- →You want feedback on a finished manuscript rather than a co-writer.
- →You already pay for a general chatbot and write short pieces.
- →You need chapter organization and formatted export for publishing.
How has NovelAI’s price changed?
It has not. A May 21, 2023 archive copy of the subscription page lists Tablet at $10, Scroll at $15 and Opus at $25 a month. The January 14, 2025 copy shows the same three prices, and the current subscription page still does on October 29, 2026. The FAQ adds a direct line: “No, we are not raising prices. Opus stays at $25.”
What changed is what the money buys. In January 2025 Opus topped out at 8,192 tokens of story memory and its exclusive model was Llama 3 Erato. Today the tier chart gives Opus 28,672 tokens, and the models page says the GLM-4.6 based models add an 8,192 token rollover window on top, so usable context in the editor sits between 28,672 and 36,864 tokens. The page describes that as roughly quadrupling the context of its earlier models.
The image side moved the other way. NovelAI Diffusion V5 launched on August 21, 2026, and the FAQ says it costs more than twice as much to run as V4.5, so free Opus generations on V5 now draw from a refilling usage bar instead of being open-ended. The same FAQ also changed a policy that matters to anyone who cancels: subscription Anlas now reset to zero when the subscription ends.
What does each tier mean for a fiction writer?
Memory is the real difference. One token is about four characters, so Tablet keeps roughly 32,768 characters of your story, Lorebook entries and instructions in view, Scroll about 49,152 and Opus about 114,688. Anything older falls out of the AI’s view unless a Lorebook entry or memory note brings it back. For a short story, Tablet is enough. For a novel draft with a cast of a dozen, the gap shows up as the AI forgetting a subplot or a character’s eye color.
Expressed per $5, our arithmetic: Scroll adds 4,096 tokens for $5 more than Tablet, and Opus adds 16,384 more tokens for $10 more than Scroll. The step to Opus is the better value per dollar, and it also unlocks Xialong, the company’s storytelling finetune of the 355 billion parameter GLM-4.6, plus Llama 3 Erato.
One snag: the FAQ’s answer on memory limits still quotes 3,072 and 8,192 tokens, older figures than the tier chart on the subscription page. The tier chart matches the models page, so treat it as current.
Is the Lorebook worth paying for?
The Lorebook is why world-builders pick NovelAI. Each entry, say a city, a magic rule or a rival house, has activation keys. When a key word appears in recent text, the entry is inserted into the AI’s context, so the model “knows” about your world only when it matters. Entries can be exported, embedded in a PNG and shared, and the docs point to community Lorebooks on Discord.
Independent coverage agrees this is the strength. A Fast.io ranking of nine story generators, last reviewed June 8, 2026, puts NovelAI second, calling it “Best for genre fiction and world-building. Encrypted, privacy-first, minimal content filters.” The same ranking lists the costs: plain-text export only, no structured chapter management and Lorebook setup that “takes time upfront.”
The Lorebook spends memory. Every activated entry uses tokens from the same budget as your story, so a rich world on Tablet’s 8,192 tokens leaves little room for the scene itself. That is the practical reason serious world-builders end up on Opus.
NovelAI vs Sudowrite and general chatbots, in dollars
Sudowrite is the fiction tool most often weighed against NovelAI. Its pricing page lists Hobby and Student at $10 a month billed yearly or $19 billed monthly with 225,000 credits, Professional at $22 yearly or $29 monthly with 1,000,000 credits, and Max at $44 or $59. Sudowrite meters credits; NovelAI does not meter text at all. On monthly billing, a year of Sudowrite Hobby is $228 and a year of NovelAI Opus is $300, by our arithmetic.
The products solve different jobs. Professional and Max add developmental edits, line edits and beta reads, which NovelAI does not offer. NovelAI gives unlimited continuation, deeper control over sampling and the Lorebook. Pick Sudowrite to revise a manuscript you mostly wrote yourself; pick NovelAI to co-write long genre drafts and keep a large world consistent. The Academy’s Sudowrite review covers its credit math.
A general chatbot is the third option. Claude Pro is $20 billed monthly or $17 a month on an annual plan ($200 up front), per Anthropic’s pricing. Fast.io’s ranking credits Claude with the largest context window of its nine tools, which helps with planning and revision, but usage limits apply and it has no Lorebook. The same ranking calls NovelAI the default for dark and mature themes that other tools “aggressively sanitize.” If you already pay for one, try drafting there before adding NovelAI.
The image side, briefly
Images cost Anlas. Tablet and Scroll get 1,000 a month and a 20% discount on extra packs; Opus gets 10,000, which the FAQ says would cost $14 if bought separately. Opus can also make single images at normal size and up to 28 steps without spending Anlas.
On V5 those free Opus images come from a usage bar the FAQ puts at about 7,000 a month at the default 23 steps, with roughly 1,730 images in a full bar. An empty bar takes 9 days to refill on a new subscription and 7 on a continued one. Older models stay unlimited for Opus. Generous for character portraits, but no longer limitless.
NovelAI’s image model has a contested history: when image generation launched in October 2022, its training on Danbooru images drew criticism in Japan over artwork used without the artists’ consent, and on October 6, 2022 the company reported that its GitHub repository was breached and source code leaked, per Wikipedia’s account and a Hacker News thread from the next day.
Billing, trial and privacy details to know first
The free Paper trial gives 50 text generations, 30 images up to 1024x1024 and 100 text-to-speech generations, once, after email verification. Stories made during the trial carry over when you subscribe. Paid tiers renew exactly 30 days after payment, and the terms of service (effective December 8, 2025) say subscriptions are not refunded unless the company grants it. Upgrading mid-cycle charges the difference for the time left.
Privacy is a selling point with a sharp edge. The FAQ says staff cannot access or read your stories, because they are encrypted locally. It also warns that losing your email or password means permanently losing access to stories stored on its servers. Export your work regularly.
Academy data: none of the prompt packs in our library names NovelAI; the fiction writing pack holds 23 prompts in five categories and the fantasy writing pack 30 prompts in six, including a Worldbuilding Challenges category you can turn into Lorebook entries.
The verdict
NovelAI is worth it for a fiction writer who drafts long genre stories and will maintain a Lorebook, and for that writer Opus at $25 is the tier to buy: it carries 3.5 times Tablet’s memory and the best text models, at a price that has not moved since at least May 2023. Tablet suits short stories and a trial of the workflow.
Skip it if your bottleneck is revision rather than drafting; Sudowrite’s edit tools or a general chatbot will serve better. The answer would change if NovelAI raised prices or capped text the way it now caps V5 images, so check the subscription page before renewing.
