Is Readwise Reader worth it in 2026?

The new Reader-only plan against the full bundle, what changed since 2024, the student discount, and when highlight resurfacing pays for itself.

By AI Academy editorial team·Published November 2, 2026

The quick answer

Readwise Reader is worth it for learners who read a lot online and want highlights to resurface and flow into Obsidian or Notion. Reader alone costs $7.99 a month billed yearly; the full bundle with Highlights, Daily Review and exports costs $9.99 a month billed yearly or $12.99 monthly. There is no free plan, but there is a 30-day trial and a 50% academic discount.

Short answer: yes, if you read several articles, papers or newsletters a week and want to remember them. Readwise now sells Reader on its own for $7.99 a month billed yearly, beside the full Readwise plan at $9.99 a month billed yearly. That full price was $7.99 until February 2024, when Readwise raised it for new subscribers.

The right plan depends on one question: do you want your highlights to come back to you? Reader alone is a read-it-later app with AI help. Spaced-repetition Daily Review, Kindle imports and exports to Obsidian and Notion sit in Highlights, which only the full plan combines with Reader.

What you get

  • ✓New cheaper entry: Reader alone is $7.99 a month on yearly billing.
  • ✓Learning loop in the full plan: Daily Review, flashcards and Kindle imports resurface what you read.
  • ✓Exports to Obsidian and Notion: highlights flow into your notes without copying.
  • ✓50% academic discount: the full plan falls to $59.94 a year for students.
  • ✓Price lock: the 2024 increase spared existing subscribers, and the full plan promises a lifetime price.

The trade-offs

  • ✕No free plan: only a 30-day trial.
  • ✕Monthly billing is steep: $12.99 a month for the full plan, $155.88 a year.
  • ✕Reader alone skips resurfacing: Daily Review and exports need Highlights.
  • ✕Basic AI model: better Ghostreader models need a paid OpenAI API key.
  • ✕Slow payoff: reviewers say the value shows after weeks, and the interface takes time to learn.

Worth it if…

  • →Students and researchers who read many articles and PDFs and qualify for the 50% discount.
  • →Obsidian or Notion users who want highlights to arrive in their vault automatically.
  • →Kindle readers who want old highlights resurfaced by spaced repetition.

Skip it if…

  • →You save a few articles a week and a free read-it-later app is enough.
  • →You will not open Daily Review, so the full plan’s learning features go unused.
  • →You pay through the iOS app and need the student discount.

What does Readwise Reader cost in 2026?

The Readwise pricing page now lists four plans. Full Readwise, Reader plus Highlights, is $9.99 a month billed yearly or $12.99 billed monthly. Reader only and Highlights only are each $7.99 a month yearly or $8.99 monthly. Highlights Lite, without tags, notes, exports or Reader, is $5.59 yearly or $6.99 monthly.

Our arithmetic: a year of the full plan costs $119.88 on yearly billing and $155.88 on monthly billing, a $36 gap. Since $119.88 equals about nine months of monthly payments, yearly billing wins for anyone who keeps it ten months or longer. Reader alone saves $24 a year against the full plan.

There is no free plan. The subscription FAQ describes a 30-day free trial, cancellation at any time and, when you change plans, no deleted documents or highlights. The full plan also promises to lock in your price for life, which matters given the history below.

How has Readwise’s price changed?

The January 9, 2024 archive snapshot of the pricing page shows the full plan at $7.99 a month billed yearly (a $95.88 annual charge) or $8.99 monthly, with Lite at $4.49. Readwise’s January 2024 update announced that from February 18, 2024, new annual subscribers would pay $9.99 a month and new monthly subscribers $12.99, the first change since it started charging in 2018. Existing subscribers kept their old price.

The April 13, 2024 snapshot confirms the new figures: $9.99 yearly, $12.99 monthly, a $119.88 annual charge and Lite at $5.59. For monthly payers that was a 44% rise, by our arithmetic. Those prices then held for over two years.

The latest change is structural. The October 19, 2026 snapshot still showed two plans, Lite and Full. The live page now splits the bundle into Reader only and Highlights only at $7.99 a month each on yearly billing, so a reader who never used the highlight side can pay less than the full plan for the first time.

Reader only or the full plan for learning?

Reader alone gives you the reading app: articles, newsletters by email, RSS, PDFs, EPUBs, YouTube transcripts and X threads in one inbox, with highlighting, full-text search, text-to-speech and Ghostreader AI to summarize, explain or translate a document. It also includes access for AI agents through a CLI, MCP server, API and ChatGPT connector.

What Reader alone lacks is the learning loop. Daily Review, which resurfaces old highlights by spaced repetition, Mastery flashcards, Kindle and Apple Books imports, and exports to Obsidian and Notion are listed under Highlights. If your goal is to retain what you read or feed a notes vault, the $2 a month difference to the full plan buys exactly those features.

On AI: the Ghostreader FAQ says the included model is GPT-5 Mini. Higher models and automatic summaries of feed items need your own funded OpenAI API key, and a ChatGPT Plus subscription does not count as one. Budget for API usage if you want stronger models.

What students actually pay

The subscription FAQ offers a 50% academic discount to students and people in education on every plan, yearly or monthly, granted by email with proof such as a student ID or school address. It only applies to subscriptions bought on the Readwise website, not through Apple’s in-app purchase.

Our arithmetic at half price: the full plan drops to $59.94 a year and Reader alone to $47.94. Over a two-year degree, the full plan costs $119.88 with the discount against $239.76 at list price. For the cheapest useful setup, a student who reads mainly on Kindle could take Highlights Lite at half of $67.08, or $33.54 a year, though it drops exports.

Academy data: none of the prompt packs in our library names Readwise, while 8 are built around NotebookLM, Google’s research notebook, counted on October 29, 2026. The NotebookLM flashcard prompts cover the review step Readwise automates.

What do users say about Readwise Reader?

On the US App Store, the Readwise Reader app averaged 4.61 stars from 586 ratings and the separate Readwise Highlights app 4.81 from 1,513, as of October 29, 2026. Reader’s Show HN launch on December 15, 2022 drew 326 points and 156 comments.

Praise in that thread centered on polish and exports: one user called it “incredibly polished” after migrating from Instapaper, and another wrote, “The killer feature is exporting highlights to Obsidian for me though.” Price was the main objection, with one commenter saying, “I’m sorry that there isn’t a free/cheap tier.” Three years later there is still no free tier, but the Reader-only plan is the first cheaper way into the app.

Asian Efficiency’s review, updated in July 2026, reaches a similar verdict: “The value is slow to appear,” with resurfacing paying off after two to three weeks, and “Reader’s interface has a learning curve.” Its advice is to use the full 30-day trial before judging.

How it compares with Instapaper and free tools

Instapaper Premium costs $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year, and its free tier caps notes at five a month. That is about $36 a year less than Reader alone on yearly billing, by our arithmetic, but it has no spaced-repetition review or YouTube and EPUB handling.

For the notes side, Obsidian is free for personal use, with optional Sync at $4 a month billed yearly. A free reader plus Obsidian and NotebookLM can cover similar ground if you are willing to copy highlights by hand; the full Readwise plan exists to remove that step.

The verdict

Readwise Reader is worth it for heavy readers who want to keep what they read. Pick the full plan at $119.88 a year if resurfacing and Obsidian exports are the point; that is $59.94 a year for a student. Pick Reader alone at $95.88 a year if you only want one inbox for articles, PDFs and newsletters.

Skip it if you read casually: Instapaper Premium costs $59.99 a year and a free app plus Obsidian covers the basics. What would change the answer is a free tier or a lower monthly price, since $12.99 a month makes short-term use expensive.
