Is Zed worth it in 2026?
What the free editor costs, what Pro’s token credit covers, and what usage billing does to the bill in a light, a normal and a heavy month.
The quick answer
Zed is worth trying at no cost: the Personal plan is $0 forever as of 24 October 2026, and it works without AI or a subscription. The paid question is Pro, at $10 a month, which includes a monthly token credit and bills hosted usage above it at list price plus 10%. A light month stays inside the credit. On our illustrative heavy month, Pro comes to $93 only with the spend cap raised to at least $83; at the default cap, hosted usage stops at $15 of token value. Business is $30 per seat per month, with no seat minimum.

The editor costs nothing, and on the Personal plan Zed charges nothing for AI either, as long as you bring your own keys. Pro is $10 a month with $5 of hosted tokens, and every token above that bills at the model’s list price plus 10%. So what Pro really costs depends on the month: the plan price alone when usage stays inside the credit, and $93 in the heavy month we model below, on the same model, once the spend cap is raised.
This review rests on Zed’s pricing page, its plans and usage documentation and its hosted-model price list, all read on 24 October 2026, not on hands-on testing. Every per-token price is one Zed prints. The usage volumes are our own assumptions, and every total is our arithmetic on those prices. Our other AI tool reviews sit in the reviews hub.

What you get
- ✓Personal is free forever, and the editor works without AI features or a subscription.
- ✓Pro’s monthly token credit covers a light month, so the bill stays at the plan price.
- ✓Hosted usage is priced per model against a public list, so every line of the bill can be checked.
- ✓A 14-day trial with a GPT-6 Luna balance needs no card and ends on its own.
- ✓Business has no seat minimum and month-to-month plans, so a five-person team can start without a contract.
The trade-offs
- ✕The usage bill has no fixed number: the same editor costs the plan price in a light month and $93 in our heavy one.
- ✕The default spend cap stops hosted usage at $15 of token value, below the $22 of our normal month.
- ✕Personal has no Zed-hosted AI, so you need your own keys, and Zed’s Edit Predictions need Pro.
- ✕Business has no included credit and no trial, so any seat that uses hosted AI pays for it on top of the seat fee from day one.
- ✕SSO, SAML and SCIM are planned but not yet available, which holds back larger teams.
Worth it if…
- →A learner or hobby developer who wants a free editor and already holds an API key.
- →A developer who wants Zed-hosted models and whose usage stays inside the credit most months.
- →A small team that wants org-wide model policies and one invoice, and can wait for SSO.
Skip it if…
- →Someone whose usage reaches our modelled normal month (5 million input and 1 million output tokens, $22 at Zed’s prices), which passes the default cap.
- →A team that needs SSO, SAML or SCIM now.
- →Anyone who needs a fixed monthly bill, since the pricing page gives no typical monthly usage figure.
The free plan: the editor costs nothing, and the AI runs on your keys
Personal is free forever. Zed’s documentation says the editor works without AI features or a subscription, and it needs no sign-in. On Personal you can run agents on your own API keys, or through external agents such as Claude Agent and Codex CLI. Zed-hosted models and Zed’s Edit Predictions need Pro. Edit Predictions from another provider, such as GitHub Copilot or a local model, still work, so the free editor can keep autocomplete without a Zed bill.
The catch is that Personal leaves the whole AI bill with the provider behind your key, which charges its own list rate. That suits a learner who already holds a key. Anyone without one has an extra account to set up before the AI works, and Zed’s hosted models stay out of reach until they pay for Pro.
Pro: what the credit covers and where the limit bites
Zed prints Pro as a monthly price only. The plan includes unlimited Edit Predictions, all hosted models and a token credit that resets on your billing date. Usage above the credit bills at the same list rate, a rule Zed states in its own FAQ. That makes the monthly figure the one to budget against.
The limit that matters is the spend cap. The default allows $10 of token spend beyond the credit, so a default month can use $15 of token value before hosted usage stops until the limit resets. Setting the cap to $0 limits your total to the subscription price. Raising it above $10 may bill you through threshold billing, which charges at month end or for each additional $10 incurred. Current usage sits on the Billing page at dashboard.zed.dev.
Verified university students get the Student plan, free for one year, with $10 a month in token credits and unlimited Edit Predictions. It leaves out Claude Opus, Claude Fable, GPT-6 Astra and two GPT-5 pro models.
Usage billing in three monthly cases, at Zed’s printed prices
We model one model, Claude Sonnet 5.5, because the models page prints its price for both the provider and Zed. The volumes are our assumptions, not Zed measurements: a light month is 1 million input and 0.2 million output tokens, a normal month 5 million and 1 million, and a heavy month 20 million and 4 million. Zed prints Sonnet 5.5 at $2.20 per million input and $11.00 per million output tokens, against the provider’s $2.00 and $10.00. Everything here is illustrative at prices read on 24 October 2026.
In the light month, the tokens come to $4.40 at Zed’s prices, inside the credit, so the bill is the plan price. On your own key the same tokens cost $4.00 at the provider. In the normal month, $22.00 of tokens leaves $17 above the credit, so the Pro bill is $27 with the cap raised to $17, or $20.00 on your own key. In the heavy month, $88.00 of tokens leaves $83 above the credit, so the Pro bill is $93 with the cap raised to $83, against $80.00 on your own key. A Business seat adds its seat fee to the same usage, which puts the three months at $34.40, $52.00 and $118.00.
Two results matter more than the totals. The normal month runs past the default cap, so a developer with that usage must raise the cap or lose hosted usage for the rest of the month. The model also moves the bill more than the plan does. The heavy month on GPT-6 Luna comes to $4.40 at Zed’s prices, inside the credit, so the bill stays at the plan price, while the provider lists the same tokens at $4.00. Cache reads and writes, which the models page also prices, are left out of every total.
Business for a five-person team: a seat fee, no minimum, no trial
Business is $30 per seat, per month, with no seat minimum. Zed calls it self-serve for organizations of any size, offers month-to-month plans to everyone, and takes order forms from 25 seats through sales. Each paid seat gets all hosted models, unlimited Edit Predictions and org-wide admin controls, on one invoice. There is no fixed AI credit: seats pay standard usage rates for Zed-hosted AI, or bring their own keys.
For five people, the seat fees alone come to $150 a month, our arithmetic on the printed seat price. Normal usage at $22 a seat brings the team to $260 a month. Admins set one pre-tax org-wide spend limit on the Data and Privacy page, and once it is reached, hosted use stops for members until it resets or an admin raises it.
Zed against the editors we already review
Zed prices hosted AI per token against a public model list, so every line can be checked model by model. Cursor, Windsurf, GitHub Copilot and Claude Code each have a review here with its own plan detail, and this page does not price them. The real choice is where you want the AI bill to come from: your own keys, Zed’s per-token list, or another editor’s plan. For a head-to-head, see our Claude Code vs Cursor comparison.
Academy data: of the 72 prompts in our Cursor, Windsurf and Claude Code packs (21, 30 and 21, counted on 24 October 2026), none is written for Zed, which has no pack. Every Zed figure here comes from zed.dev. To start with an editor you already use, begin with the Cursor pack or the Claude Code pack.
The verdict
Zed is worth trying at no cost: the Personal plan costs nothing, and the 14-day trial lets you test GPT-6 Luna, the only hosted model in it, on a $5 balance. For AI billed by Zed, Pro earns its price only when usage stays inside the credit most months.
Measure before you commit. The Billing page shows your usage, and two weeks of it tells you whether you sit in the light case or the normal one. In the light case, Pro costs the plan price. In the normal case, raise the cap deliberately, because the default stops hosted usage early. For a team, Business is worth it when you need its admin controls now, and premature if SSO is a requirement today.

Frequently asked questions
Is Zed free to use?▾
The editor is free, and the Personal plan costs $0 forever. It works without AI features or a subscription. You can run AI on your own API keys or external agents with no Zed charge, but Zed-hosted models and Edit Predictions need Pro.
How much does Zed Pro cost?▾
Pro is $10 a month, with a monthly token credit included. Hosted usage above the credit bills at each model’s list price plus 10%. A default month stops hosted usage at $15 of token value, and the cap can be set to $0 to keep spend at the subscription price.
How does Zed bill AI usage?▾
By token, at the per-model rates on Zed’s models page, which are each provider’s list rate plus the same markup. Current usage is on the Billing page at dashboard.zed.dev.
Is there a free trial of Zed Pro?▾
Yes. It runs 14 days with $5 of GPT-6 Luna usage and unlimited accepted Edit Predictions, and ends when the balance runs out or the 14 days pass. No card is needed, and it converts to Zed Free without a cancellation. Business has no trial.
Is Zed Business worth $30 per seat?▾
For a team that needs org-wide model policies, an admin spend limit and one invoice, the seat fee buys those controls. Five seats cost $150 a month before any usage, and SSO, SAML and SCIM are not available yet.
